We use I PICK to find good fit books. It stands for
I-I Choose my book
P-Purpose-why am I reading?
I-Interest-do I like it?
C-Comprehend-do you understand?
K-Know-do you know most of the words?
Use this strategy at home when your child is picking out good fit books!
5 Finger Rule
Select any page and read it. If there are more than 5 words on the page that you do not know, the book is too difficult. Select a new book. If there are 3-4 words on a page that you do not know, this is a "good fit" book. If there are only 1-2 words on a page that you do not know, the book is too easy and should be considered a "fun book" and not a suggested book to be reading during their 20 minutes of homework reading at night. Students will have time during the day to read "good fit" books and "fun books".
