Words Their Way is a program for teaching orthography to benefit spelling, vocabulary, reading, and writing. It is a holistic approach to an important part of any language arts curriculum. The program has proven quite popular and a series of books have been published to
address specific learning needs. It is popular in today's educational culture for a couple of reasons: 1) It allows for instruction to be differtiated based on student needs; 2) the program is assessment-driven. Differentiation and assessment are key themes in the present
educational environment.

This is a research based spelling program that has realized great success in helping students learn how to spell correctly.
Each of your children were assessed or will be assessed to determine their spelling level. Based on this assessment, they will be working on sorting and spelling words that have a spelling relationship. This is the process that we will be completing at school each week for word
work and any additional practice at home during the week would be greatly appreciated.
Here is our daily schedule for word work each week:
Monday
Students receive a word list and the teacher explains the word sort.
Tuesday
Students will sort their words and write them in their word work notebook.
Wednesday
Students will do a word hunt to find new words that follow the spelling
pattern we are practicing for the week.
Thursday
Students will do a blind sort with a partner.
A partner will say a word and they will need to be able to spell the word correctly and also put it in the correct sorting column.
Then, they will glue their sort into their Word Work notebook.
Friday
Students will be assessed on their words for the week.
Words spelled incorrectly from the Word Work Assessment will be put on each students individual spelling ring for additional practice. We will store this spelling ring in the JUNGLE book binder so that it is home each night for practice. Students should practice these words a minimum of three different times at home. Each time the student spells the word correctly at home, place an "x" on the index card with the word. Once the student has three "x's" on the index card for a particular word, they may bring it to me to review one more time and if it is spelled correctly, they will be allowed to remove the card from their spelling ring. This only applies to misspelled words from their Word Work assessment that is given each Friday.
